Habitat for Humanity
In 2005, a group of students in the Carpentry/Preservation Carpentry programs decided they would like to do something other than hang out on the beach for spring break. Sean Hardeo (CA '06) picked up the ball, contacted Habitat for Humanity and organized a trip to Fort Myers, FL. Eight students made the trip down and spent a week helping to rebuild homes that had been hit hard by hurricanes.

When the group returned Sean wanted to keep the good will rolling, so he contacted several of the local Habitat chapters and finally settled on the Merrimack Valley chapter in Lawrence. Monthly build trips were initiated and groups of NBSS students and alumni have been helping to build homes there since that time. Over 20 build trips have been held so far.
After 2+ years of organizing and making sure the program was well established, Sean passed the baton over to the Alumni Council (of which he was a member at the time). Thanks to his great effort and the help of Jason Gregoricus in Student and Alumni Services, a wonderful humanitarian effort is flourishing at NBSS. The Alumni Council is proud to carry on the tradition and now takes on the responsibility of organizing the monthly build trips.
The group continues its monthly trips in Lawrence helping to rebuild 4 homes that were completely destroyed by fire in January, 2008. If you are interested in joining us on a build trip, please visit the NBSS Habitat web site for more information including an online form you can use to volunteer. You can also contact Jason at the school directly.
